the velvet looks pretty good... I love using the rubber mats that Yeti got for DJ... you can get offcuts of rubber from Clarke Rubber if they have them there... wood also works well, thicker velvet (like your curtains :P) and silk/satin can be good too ;D experiment until you find what you like! good interpretation!!!
A friend of mine did some photos with royal blue foamboard as a background... it really made the objects pop, and looked kind of surreal. Of course you can use any color, but there was just something about the blue...
